Your Changing Body: A Month-by-Month Guide for First-Time Moms

Your body is doing something incredible—growing life. That means changes, and lots of them.

1st Trimester:

  • Feeling bloated

  • Fatigue- like the most tired you’ve EVER been! Make sure to rest as much as you can.

  • Breast tenderness

  • Nasua

  • Vomiting (maybe)

  • Always hungry or craving specific things- call your provider if your cravings are strange (i.e. dirt or soap- this is called pica.)

2nd Trimester:

  • Belly pops- some sooner than others!

  • Skin changes (hello, "pregnancy glow")

  • More energy (finally!)

    • This is when you’ll have the energy to exercise again, if you want!

  • Cravings may intensify

  • Start to feel the baby move (flutters at first then little kicks!)

    • I felt my oldest move for the first time when I was in the bath. His elbow (or knee) moved across my stomach like a shark fin! It was SO cool.

3rd Trimester:

  • Swelling

  • Back pain

  • Trouble sleeping

  • Pelvic pain- possibly

  • Heart burn

    • The old wives’ tale, “the more heartburn, the more hair the baby has” was true for me. Both my kids came out with full heads of hair!

  • Nesting kicks in.

    • You’ll naturally want everything to be ready before baby arrives but makes sure to rest up too!!

Each phase comes with its own magic and challenges. The lists above are not all inclusive but cover what most women experience. Embrace the transformation—you are creating something beautiful.
